The 18th Hashikawaryu Grand Prize

We received 3,081 haiku applications for the ``18th Hashisenryu'' competition, which closed on June 4, 2023.

As a result of careful selection within Hyosaemon, the grand prize and other awards have been decided.

We asked Mr. Senryu Bito, the 16th president, to make the selections for each award.

18th Hashisenryu Grand Prize
My grandson's long chopsticks after returning home after the coronavirus
Gifu Prefecture Tanaka (59 years old)

This poem depicts a scene from an ordinary day's life, but it captures the "now" time that has transcended the world divided by the coronavirus pandemic. The growth of the grandchild during the long years was depicted so that it could be seen just by saying "chopstick long". I want to applaud the splendor of condensing the recent new corona and human time captured in just seventeen sounds.

Matching desired from chopsticks rather than an app
Tokyo “pen name/Jukun” (39 years old)

Nowadays, we are robbing people of opportunities to meet people, and things like "matching apps" are becoming bigger and bigger. Rather than AI matching, it is much easier to determine compatibility by looking at the slight movements of the chopsticks.

Fits good chopstick fingers and heart
Osaka Prefecture “Pen name/deduction dad” (64 years old)

It's a bit like a slogan, but I guess this fit is more than just ease of use because it's used every day. Above all else, chopsticks fit your heart, and you become attached to them, and they become your companions in life.

I can't stop chatting with chopsticks for the first time in four years
Tokushima Prefecture "pseudonym / Nori Nori" (57 years old)

A phrase that captures the times. The feeling of freedom after the coronavirus has returned to the dining scene. The poem conveys a joy that goes beyond the fact that such unpleasant words as ``shut up eating'' have been thrown into the spotlight.

The future of the earth saved by my chopsticks
Mr. Kobayashi, Mie Prefecture (36 years old)

This is also a phrase from the era that depicts the SDGs. Of course, chopsticks alone cannot save the earth, but becoming aware of things like using chopsticks in everyday life will eventually lead to saving humanity.

Chopsticks Culture Broken Bat Revived
Saitama prefecture "pseudonym / Futan" (73 years old)

The SDGs, which are exactly the demands of the times, are one of the things Hyozaemon has been working on since early on, “Kattobashi!!”. The revived chopsticks are not only a practical item, but also a wonder of two birds with one stone that connects the feelings of famous players.

Special Judge 16th Bitogawa Yanagi Award
"Pseudonym / Setchan" (80 years old), Osaka Prefecture, where gods are well behaved beyond chopsticks
The chopsticks lined up on the dining table are neatly arranged. Sometimes, it is decorated with your favorite chopstick rest. Chopstick culture, which has been handed down from the age of the gods, is the very attitude of Japanese people toward food. A culture that demands good manners not only for the manners of chopsticks but also for everyday trivial matters such as eating is beautiful. I'm glad I was born Japanese.

General comment
There were many bright phrases that seemed to have a sense of openness in the phrases that had escaped the restrictions of the corona disaster.
The world seen through chopsticks is in this senryu, which captures people directly.
Some of the poems included phrases such as ``I'd rather use chopsticks to bring peace than weapons,'' indicating that they were looking at a world that goes beyond chopsticks that are simply used for food.
The number of similar poems increases as the number of poems increases, but I made sure to select poems that capture the times. We hope that you will enjoy the human world through chopsticks in the 5th year of Reiwa.
